Sample Preparation Technician – Century Mine

A rewarding opportunity now exists for a Sample Preparation Technician to join our New Century Resources team based on site at the Century Mine (Lawn Hill). This position will be offered on a 14:7 roster with rolling day shift and night shift with FIFO available for non-local candidates (POH Cairns/QLD).

The role of the Sample Preparation Technician involves:

  • Analysis of samples to agreed standards in a safe, timely manner and store/report data ready for analysis
  • Adhere to an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs during both good and bad times: act in line with those values; reward the right values and disapprove of others; practice what he/she preaches
  • Follow procedures as outlined in manuals and by senior staff
  • Use his/her time effectively and efficiently; value time; concentrate his/her efforts on the more important priorities; willingly carry out a broader range of activities as directed

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Sample receival, data entry, management, storage and disposal of all production, geological, metallurgical and environmental samples as per company requirements
  • Develop and coordinate the delivery of the Laboratory results in a timely, safe and effective manner
  • Preparation and analysis of samples using various measuring and assay apparatus including metallurgical preparation and sizing equipment; XRF, AAS, Leco carbon / sulphur analysers, ICP, classical methods, Mastersizer and flotation cells
  • Data collection, review and reporting of results including all required QA/QC procedures
  • Calibration, maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment and laboratory areas
  • Accountable for Quality Assurance / Quality control (QA/QC) of sample results before submission to the Laboratory Superintendent/Co-ordinator
  • Maintain and foster an exceptional work ethic
  • Observing safety regulations and compliance with New Century Resources policies and procedures. Maintain a safe, contaminate-free work environment
  • Safe and environmental compliant management of analytical reagents, chemicals and laboratory wastes
  • Taking the initiative to continually improve your work, the overall business and promote the goals of the organisation
  • Working effectively and collaboratively with immediate colleagues and others in cross-functional relationships, on tasks within the context of New Century Resources vision
  • Comply with all regulations and requirements as laid out in Laboratory manuals
  • Ensure that the lab operates in a manner which maintains and enhances New Century Resources’ reputation with all stakeholders; and
  • Any other reasonable tasks as requested by Supervisors

Ideally, applicants will possess the following technical skills, knowledge and qualifications:

  • >3 years’ experience working in site-based mining operations
  • A minimum of 1-year FIFO experience on a remote site / location
  • Minimum of Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma in Applied Science or Science Degree – highly valued
  • Previous NATA signatory – highly valued
  • Base metals laboratory sample preparation methods
  • Wet chemistry knowledge
  • Calibration, maintenance, equipment cleaning and continuous improvement
  • Familiar with NATA requirements, applicable Australian Standards and ISO17025
  • Familiar with lab equipment such as bench flotation cells, rotary sample dividers, grinding mills, crushers, rotary sample divider, grinding mills, pulverisers, cyclosizer, sieves
  • Current First Aid / CPR Certificate
  • Current C Class Driver’s licence
